Mother Mary: Watching, Pondering, Trusting God Through Every Gate0
A mother can learn many things from Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
Mary’s journey began when the angel Gabriel brought her an astonishing message: she would become the mother of Jesus. She did not understand how everything would happen. She asked, “How will this be?” Yet after receiving God’s answer, she surrendered herself to His will: “I am the Lord’s servant.” — Luke 1:34, 38.
Mary teaches mothers that faith is not pretending that we have no questions. We may ask questions and still trust God.
Mary gave birth under humble circumstances and laid Jesus in a manger because there was no suitable guest room available. Shepherds came telling what the angels had announced about her child. Later, wise men came from the East bringing valuable gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Scripture says:
“Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” — Luke 2:19
What was she thinking?
The Bible does not tell us everything that passed through her mind. But Mary was watching the extraordinary life of the child God had entrusted to her.
She watched Jesus grow.
She saw Him living in the home with Joseph, the carpenter who cared for Him as His earthly father.
When Jesus was twelve years old and remained behind at the temple, Mary and Joseph searched anxiously for Him. Mary even told Him of their concern. She did not understand everything Jesus said about being in His Father’s house, but again Scripture says that she treasured these things in her heart.
Years later, at the wedding in Cana, Mary noticed that the wine had run out. She brought the need to Jesus and then spoke some of the most valuable words a mother can give:
“Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
What wonderful advice for our children, grandchildren, families, and ourselves!
Do whatever Jesus tells you.
Jesus went on to teach, heal the sick, welcome sinners, feed the hungry, confront hypocrisy, and even raise the dead.
Mary could not control His journey.
That is another lesson for mothers.
There comes a time when the child we carried becomes an adult walking the road God has given them. A mother can pray, advise, love, and remain present, but she cannot walk every step for her child.
Then came the terrible gate of the cross.
The Bible specifically tells us that Mary stood near the cross while Jesus was crucified. — John 19:25.
Imagine a mother watching the son she had carried, delivered, fed, protected, and watched grow now suffering before her eyes.
Sometimes the greatest ministry of a mother is simply faithful presence.
Mary teaches us that faith does not mean there will be no pain. It does not mean a mother will always understand what God is doing. It does not mean she will always have the power to rescue her children from every difficult gate.
It means she keeps trusting God.
Mary was not always silent, but she knew when to speak and when to ponder.
After the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, Mary is again mentioned among the believers praying together. — Acts 1:14.
She had traveled from the promise of a baby to the fulfillment of God’s salvation plan.
Mothers today can learn from Mary:
Listen to God.
Ask when you do not understand.
Trust when you cannot see tomorrow.
Treasure what God is doing in your family.
Point your children toward Jesus.
Remain prayerful when their journey becomes difficult.
Stand near them when you cannot fix everything.
And above all, remember Mary’s enduring instruction:
“Do whatever He tells you.”
Jesus Christ is still the Light of the World, the Way, the Truth and the Life, and the Prince of Peace.
A mother’s hands cannot control every gate her children will pass through, but her prayers can continually place them into the hands of God.
Lord Jesus Christ, give mothers the listening heart of Mary, the courage to trust You through every gate, the wisdom to speak at the right time, and the faith to remain near You when life becomes difficult. Amen.
